letter to the editor....

I would like to draw the attention of the campus and the community to a very important international event taking place on Saturday,October 24, 2009 from 1 to 4 PM. The Climate Action Coalition of New Paltz, in coalition with NYPIRG is hosting the 350.org Climate Action Fair in Hasbrouck Park. What is 350? “350” is the parts per million of atmospheric CO2 that scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have recommended as safe to avoid irreversible climate disasters. Just recently the level reached 390. Besides that, It's an opportunity to take a stand against climate change for a safe future. It's a day to come together with your local community, as well as other people participating in events all over the world, to take bold action against climate change. It's the reason to hold your elected officials accountable to go to Copenhagen on December 7th with a strong plan to reduce America's carbon emissions.

The debate is over. Climate change is real, it's here, and it's time to act. We know this; a UN panel recently won a Nobel prize for proving that human impact is the cause of the crises. When NYPIRG came knocking on your doors this summer, it was to educate the community regarding the catastrophe that we are bringing upon ourselves. An excellent way to do your part is by coming to this fair and educating yourself about easy changes you can make to your lifestyle. There will be many interesting exhibits, live music, activities for kids, and all sorts of fun to be had. It's going to be a giant planet-saving spectacle. I guarantee that your entire family will have a ball. There really is something for everyone.

At 3:50 PM, we will form a human “350” and take an aerial photo. This will be part of a photo series from all over the world. From Bangkok to Montauk, people will be gathering to take a stand against climate change. Be a part of history. Join in the action. We are 350, and the time to act is now.
